The son of the woman accused of murdering three people in a Point cook house fire says he believes his mother didn’t intend to hurt anyone.

Neighbours wake to Point Cook fatal fire

The accused Point Cook family killer is a sex worker who allegedly started the fatal fire as revenge following a dispute with a male client at the property.

Escort Jenny Hayes, 46, is charged with murdering Abby Forrest, 19, her partner Inda Sohal, 28, and their newborn baby Ivy after allegedly starting a fire at their Totem Way townhouse about 3.40am on Wednesday.

The slain family were innocent, with police confirming they had never met Ms Hayes.

It is understood she had visited the property prior to the deadly fire for a rendezvous with a man who was renting a room there.

A dispute broke out over sexual services and Ms Hayes left the property.

It is alleged she later returned to set fire to the man’s mattress, sparking an enormous inferno that engulfed the home and killed the young family.

The man Ms Hayes had argued with was not home at the time.

Her son Harley Hayes, 19, said he believed his mum never meant to hurt anyone.

“I was at home in the morning and mum had messaged me saying ‘I think I’ve done something stupid’,” he said.

“Then she knocked on my door, came in and explained what she had done. I know for a fact she didn’t know there was anyone in that house. In the moment she was angry and obviously she shouldn’t have done it if it was going to hurt someone in the first place, but it was never her intention to hurt anyone.”

Mr Hayes said his mum may have “snapped” and he felt for the families of the three victims.

“I’m upset but I still get to see my mum. I just hope that the other families are OK,” he said.

He added: “I’ve spoken to her once after she was arrested. She was hysterical, obviously both of us were, we were just crying on the phone. We didn’t get much in besides ‘I love you’, ‘I miss you’ and ‘I’m sorry’.

“She was always a really loving and caring mum. She wasn’t the sort to randomly set a house on fire or intentionally hurt people.

“People called her ‘mum’ because she would care for them that much. She was always focused on everyone else besides herself.”

Brandon Aganetti, a close friend and neighbour of Ms Hayes, said she was a good mum.

“She was an escort her whole life to keep a roof over (her son’s) head,” he said.

Mr Aganetti claimed Ms Hayes told him the man staying at the home had robbed her.

“She was in tears when she called me. She said the bloke ran away from his house — why would you do that?” he said. “There are two stories — his and hers.”

Ms Hayes is facing three counts of murder and three counts of arson causing death, and will remain in custody until her next court date on March 1.

Ms Forrest and Mr Sohal, originally from India, had been together for about a year and were ecstatic to be new parents.

Ivy was just three weeks old and had only met her grandparents twice. The whole family were due to reunite for a family dinner this weekend.

Her sister Emily Forrest, 24, said the family was completely shattered.

“Dad is trying to remain strong and hold it together for mum. She is in a million pieces,” she said.

Emily said she and her sister were “really close” and she knew the man staying at the property, but did not want to disclose his details.

Shock over Abby’s death spread to her former Geelong school, St Ignatius College, where she was on Friday remembered as a “kind and gentle woman”.

Staff held a service to pray for the 19-year-old and her family.

Her year 12 co-ordinator and teacher, Joe McLean, recalled her as a “kind and gentle young woman” who was “very much respected by all students and staff at the college”.

A GoFund Me account has so far raised more than $25,000 to help cover the cost of the funerals.
