Victoria is in for two days of wild weather as rain lashes the state, with warnings of falls up to 60mm and flash flooding in some areas.

Heavy rainfall could cause flash flooding across Victoria, including in fire-hit areas, as ex-tropical cyclone Esthersoaks the state.

A severe weather warning is in place for tomorrow and Thursday for the North East and parts of East Gippsland, Northern Country and North Central.

Remnants of the ex-tropical cyclone are due to deliver welcome falls to areas recovering from the bushfires.

The weather bureau has warned it could result in flash floods.

Locations which may be affected include Shepparton, Wodonga, Wangaratta, Corryong, Bright and Falls Creek.

The ex-tropical cyclone has been moving south from the Northern Territory and was expected to reach the New South Wales Victoria border tomorrow.

Tomorrow’s rainfall totals in the warning areas are likely to be between 20mm and 60mm, bureau senior forecaster Richard Carlyon said.

“As it moves southward it will pump moisture into a low-pressure trough over Victoria so we’re likely to see very humid conditions develop during Wednesday and Thursday and also rain develop across the state during those days,” he said.

But Mr Carlyon said the wild weather would mostly pass ahead of the Labour Day long weekend

“It looks like ex-tropical cyclone Esther will end up in the Tasman Sea by Friday. The low pressure trough will join it there and start to move across to the east – that means a cooler and less humid airflow.”

He said the bulk of the showers were due to have fallen by Thursday night.

Melbourne is forecast to have some light showers tonight, and should be humid with a chance of showers tomorrow and Thursday.

The weather warning for northeastern Victoria was issued this afternoon and the bureau said rain would develop tomorrow, mainly during the afternoon and evening and continue into Thursday.
