No stranger to a scandal, Eddie McGuire has launched a staunch defence of embattled Australia Post boss Christine Holgate, with the Collingwood president attacking the “hacks” and “dullards” trying to drag her down.

Australia Post boss steps aside amid investigation into luxury watch bonuses

Eddie McGuire has defended Australia Post’s embattled boss Christine Holgate after revelations extravagant Cartier watches were bought for executives for making a deal.

The Collingwood Football Club president said “hacks” and “dullards” were trying to drag Ms Holgate — a Pies board member — down.

Mr McGuire said he was angry when he heard the Scott Morrison call for her to step down during question time on Thursday.

“Christine Holgate is one of the most impressive people that I have ever met,” Mr McGuire told news.com.au.

“Her absolute devotion to looking after people and getting an outcome is second to none.

“Her sacrifice is incredible.”

Pressure was mounting on Friday night for Ms Holgate to resign, amid growing frustration within the Morrison Government over a string of scandals including spending about $900,000 on office plants over two years.

The issue erupted when Ms Holgate told Senate Estimates that $12,000 was spent on luxury watches for four staff in 2018.

But Australia Post board chair Lucio Di Bartolomeo on Friday evening revealed the timepieces actually had a combined value of $19,950.

He also distanced the board from the decision, revealing the then board was not asked to approve the extravagant gifts.

“The Board was further advised today (Friday) that these papers and minutes do not record any subsequent reference to the purchase,” he said in a statement.

“Australia Post is one of our country’s most trusted brands and its reputation has been built over 210 years.

“The Board will ensure this legacy is preserved and as part of this the Board and management have this morning recommitted to full co-operation with the Government initiated Inquiry.”

Opposition leader Anthony Albanese has called for the entire Australia Post board to be investigated.

“What’s extraordinary here is that the board are let off scot-free by this Prime Minister,” he said on Friday.

Mr Morrison reiterated his position when he addressed after the national cabinet meeting on Friday, vehemently disagreeing with the Collingwood president.

“We are the shareholder on behalf of the taxpayers.

“I don’t agree with the assessment that Eddie (McGuire) has made.

“I don’t think that what we learned yesterday would past any test with the Australia company.”

OPINION: MORRISON’S ATTACK ON HOLGATE WAS HYSTERIA ON STEROIDS
