EDDIE McGuire has called for a State Government taskforce to choose between his $1 billion stadium dream and the AFL’s plans to remodel Etihad Stadium.
The Magpies boss is lobbying for a new 60,000-seat stadium next door to the MCG in opposition to the league’s bid for a $300 million overhaul of the Docklands stadium.
“We need to look at a feasibility study to work out just what the best long-term plan is,” McGuire told the Herald Sun on Friday night.
“And if a sports and entertainment infrastructure plan suggested that the best result was Etihad Stadium, then that’s fantastic.
“But if it comes out that we can join up the sports and entertainment precinct to the arts precinct and put ourselves 50 years ahead of all opposition and open up our eyes to a whole range of events that have never been brought to Melbourne — and bulletproof the Victorian AFL clubs — it would be a wonderful thing for our city.
“It would be a legacy in much the same way that Governor La Trobe did when he gazetted the land for the MCG back in 1853.”
