He came to town to honour a mate and a mentor.
But now, superstar Ed Sheeran is blessing Victorian hotspots with random visits, bright smiles and friendly conversation.
Sheeran’s latest pop-up, with wife Cherry Seaborn, and their baby Lyra, happened at Sorrento, on the Mornington Peninsula, where the British singer-songwriter was seen pushing a pram while on a family stroll.
He made several stops along the way, including a pause to show happy fans his tattoos, and another interlude to take selfies.
Sheeran enjoyed each random interaction, without bodyguards or an entourage in tow. In fact, security only showed up to bring umbrellas when the weather gave way to a brief rain shower.
His Sorrento sojourn followed a night at the footy to watch the Saints.
Sheeran flew to Australia with his family to honour music legend Michael Gudinski, whom he considered a “father figure,” at a state memorial last week.
The memorial featured tributes from superstars including Sheeran, Kylie Minogue, Bruce Springsteen, Sir Elton John, Billy Joel, Sting, and local performers Jimmy Barnes, Paul Kelly and Mark Seymour.
At the event, Gudinski’s son Matt said: “It means the world that Cherry and Lyra have joined our family.”
A day later, Sheeran and Matt, got matching tattoos of Michael Gudinski’s famous “number one” hand signal.
Sheeran also wrote a new song, Visiting Hours, as a tribute to Gudinski.
Sheeran is yet to elaborate on the song, but lyrically, it expresses the pain of losing a dear friend, and confidant, as he considers the road ahead without one of his best mates.
