EastLink tunnels evacuated: Motorists forced out of cars

EASTLINK drivers were forced to flee their cars this evening after a vehicle fire caused both tunnels to be evacuated.
The tunnels were shut for an hour after the fire in Mullum Mullum tunnel about 8.55pm.
Motorists were told to leave their cars and evacuate the tunnel.
The fire was quickly put out.

Two inbound lanes and one outbound lane have been reopened.
“Once emergency services have conducted their investigation, we’ll reopen the whole tunnel with three lanes in each direction,” EastLink spokesman Doug Spender-Roy said.
Drivers close to the burning car were stopped and made to evacuate the tunnel.
The EastLink spokesman said they would be allowed to pick up their cars when it was deemed safe by emergency services.

No one was injured in the blaze.
Drivers were told not to use their phones in the tunnel but many took photos.
“Stuck on the EastLink and the tunnel is closed,” one woman wrote on social media.
“Also two firetrucks! I hope nothing too bad has happened.”
