Easter forecast: Cold and wet weather in store for Victoria

Victorians will have an extra reason to stay at home today, with strong winds and showers set to lash parts of the state later today.

Victorians are set to shiver their way into Easter Sunday as strong winds and showers descend on Victoria later today.

A cold front moved through the state this morning plummeting temperatures overnight.

The freezing temperatures will continue into Easter Sunday with a top of 16C expected – more than ten degrees less than Easter last year.

Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Miriam Bradbury said the cool weather is due to a series of fronts expected to hit the state throughout today.

“Bit of a wintry day today is what we can expect,” Ms Bradbury said.

“We saw the front moving through overnight so we saw some rain coming through in the early hours of this morning,

“However, it has been followed up by a second front which is running through the southwest of Victoria at the moment.”

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) have released a severe weather warning for much of Victoria.

Winds are expected to peak around 100 km/h in the alpine areas and between 35 and 55 km/h in Melbourne.

The Victorian State Emergency Service (SES) have already had 38 responses for trees falling in the past 24 hours.

Around 5-10mm of rain is also expected in Melbourne with up to 15mm and a potential thunderstorm expected in the east.

Although the weather is set to be cool on Easter Sunday, Victorians are still set for a mostly dry day.

“For the rest of the Easter weekend, we are expecting an improving trend,” Ms Bradbury said.

“Tomorrow we are still expecting some showers across the south, the coast and also through the eastern suburbs but much of the state is looking quite dry.”
