Driving us crazy – the Melbourne intersections and roads we loathe: RACV survey

Road upgrades to combat Victoria's rising road death toll

A chaotic roundabout in the city’s northwest has been identified by motorists as one of the city’s most dangerous intersections.

The Essendon North junction where Keilor, Bulla, Mt Alexander and Lincoln roads all meet is of serious concern, according to driver feedback from an RACV study.

The large roundabout also has two sets of tram tracks and two slip lanes. It has been a constant source of frustration for drivers, prompting reviews in recent years by VicRoads and Moonee Valley Council.

The location was one of the worst three intersections named in the interim findings from the RACV My Melbourne Road online survey.

The other dangerous junctions were the corner of Liardet and Bay streets in Port Melbourne and the roundabout where Loyola Grove and Twickenham Crescent meet in Burnley.

RACV’s head of policy James Williams said since that the launch of My Melbourne Road, the feedback from road users has provided insights on how road safety can be improved.

The survey also identified three headache roads for motorists – Mount Alexander Rd from Essendon to Ascot Vale, Princes Highway/Dandenong Rd from Windsor to Caulfield, and Sydney Rd from Brunswick and Coburg.

Mr Williams said all road users could still nominate the locations that caused them grief.

“Whether you drive, ride, walk or take public transport for your daily commute, My Melbourne Road is your chance to have your say about Melbourne’s transport network.

“This is a real opportunity to shine a light on hot spots on our roads where you feel unsafe.”

Full results from the survey will be released later in the year.

The RACV conducted a similar survey in 2021 with a rural focus. The My Country Road survey attracted more than 4000 participants from regional Victoria.

“Of the 31 most dangerous roads highlighted in My Country Road, we have since seen 16 undertake work and improvements,” Mr Williams said.

The survey comes as The Weekly Times last week revealed that more than half of the 55 roads identified as being in poor condition were still waiting major works almost six months later.

Most of the road damage was caused by spring floods last year, but others were already in a poor state before the deluge.
