A man has been charged over a fatal car crash on the Mornington Peninsula that left his friend dead.

The 21-year-old Rye man was charged with one count of culpable driving causing death and two counts of negligently causing serious injury, following the fatal crash in Tootgarook on Friday morning.

Timothy Hocking, 17, was killed when the black Mazda CX3 hit a tree in the backstreets of Tootgarook shortly after 1am on Friday.

The P-plate driver struck a roundabout at the intersection of Field and Marshall streets at speed, sending the car into a tree.

Timothy was the front seat passenger and died on impact.

Three other male passengers, all 17, remain in hospital, two in a critical condition.

The driver has been remanded in custody and will appear in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.

Tributes flowed yesterday for Timothy, who was a promising young skater and Year 12 student from nearby Rosebud.

His friends told the Herald Sun that Timothy was “more like a brother”, and that “his mum’s world’s wrecked”.
