Dozens of slips, trips and falls recorded on Melbourne train station escalators.

Escalators at Parliament and Flinders St stations remain the most dangerous in the Melbourne network with dozens of falls recorded despite an ongoing safety campaign.

The Herald Sun can reveal women with children and elderly passengers are among the 69 passengers who fell on escalators in the first six months of 2019.

Injuries ranged from facial cuts and bruises to more serious visits to the emergency department.

According to accident reports, most of the slips and trips were caused by passengers losing their balance, slipping or being knocked by bags.

Other reasons for falls include people being pushed, fainting, getting their clothing caught, and people who were on their phone or visibly drunk.

Despite the high rate of incidents Metro’s stations manager Nicholas Sleigh said the number was lower than previous years thanks to new strong safety campaign.

“Passenger safety is always our number one priority and thankfully, we are seeing fewer escalator incidents on the network as a result of the campaign educating passengers on escalator safety,” he said.

“To further reduce the risk, Metro is improving lighting at our stations and resurfacing escalator steps.

“We ask that passengers always hold onto the hand rail, use the lift when carrying heavy baggage or trolleys and stand to the left so those walking up the escalator can get past.”

In the city, Flinders St Station — Melbourne’s busiest station — had 23 incidents.

Parliament followed with 14 cases and is considered the most dangerous due to the length and steepness of the entry.

Flagstaff, Melbourne Central, North Melbourne, Clayton and Footscray stations were also at the top of the list.

Figures dating back a decade show more than 600 incident reports have been filed about escalator injuries with up to three serious falls per week.

RMIT researchers analysed injury incident reports as well as CCTV footage and found falling backwards while travelling up was the most common.

Interestingly, a third of people fell in the middle of an escalator despite having a firm footing.
