A director of a major Melbourne criminal defence firm has died.
Joshua Taaffe, specialist trial lawyer and longtime director of Doogue + George, passed away on Monday.
His death has caused great sadness in legal circles, with condolences made by a County Court judge on Friday during a criminal hearing Mr Taaffe was involved in prior to his death.
In a statement, Doogue + George described Mr Taaffe as an “outstanding lawyer” and that it had been an honour to work with him.
“There are presences that loom large in one’s life, like the moon, that are all at once brilliant, steadfast, and hold a quiet force. Josh was this; equal parts quiet and strong, exceptional and relatable, indomitable and considerate,” the firm said.
Mr Taaffe joined the firm in 2007 where he acted on behalf of a client in the first Commonwealth prosecution of terrorism offences.
He served as Deputy Chair of the Criminal Law Section and as a member of the Specialisation Committee with the Law Institute of Victoria.
He previously worked at Fitzroy Legal Service where he focused on law reform in the areas of police accountability and spent convictions.
“Josh was a leader in the firm,” Doogue + George said in its statement.
“We are bereft at the loss of our dear friend who enriched our lives with his fervour, intelligence, wit, integrity, and a dash of roguish fun. To those who had the privilege of working with him, his presence and contribution will never be forgotten and will continue to inspire.”
Doogue + George represents high-profile clients including accused poison mushroom killer Erin Patterson.
Mr Taaffe is survived by his partner and two children.
