Victorian motorists can now carry their driver’s licence on their smartphones after the rollout of digital licences.

The digital licences, available on the myVicRoads app, allow drivers to show proof of their age, identity and right to drive “at the touch of a button”.

Fully licensed drivers can access their digital IDs by downloading the myVicRoads app, logging into their account and following the on-screen instructions to activate two-step verification.

The licences feature three tabs; licence, with name, date of birth, and motorist information; identity, with address and signature; and age, featuring a tick if over 18-years-old.

VicRoads have assured the scheme is “secure”, the licences fitted with unique QR codes regenerated every two minutes that can be scanned to “verify authenticity and prevent fraudulent use”.

The on-screen cards also feature holograms alike their physical card counterparts.

Businesses can use a scanner to verify any card at their venue.

“Privacy and security of personal information is the highest priority in the digital driver licence’s development,” VicRoads state on its website.

“The app is protected by the security features of your phone, including biometrics such as thumb or face scan.

“We have tested both apps using stringent security and penetration tests.”

Learner and probationary drivers remain tied to their physical cards while on-phone ID is only available to fully licensed drivers.

The feature is expected to rollout for L and P-platers later this year.

Drivers are being encouraged to continue carrying their physical licences during the rollout to give businesses time to update their processes to accept the on-screen IDs.

All licence holders will continue to be issued with physical cards, the scheme optional.
