A total of 35 firefighters were able to contain the leak, which has affected floors 19, 20 and 21, and were conducting atmospheric monitoring.

No injuries have been reported.

The building was evacuated about 8am as many people arrived for work.

About 100 people, mostly made up of office staff from 15 William St, were evacuated and gathered under a bridge on Flinders St.

Among staff to be evacuated were workers from the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

They seemed unfazed by the evacuation.

“It just seemed like a regular fire drill … we’re all trained and know what to do so if we went,” one worker said.

Tasmanian man Terry said he was waiting to check in to his apartment next door when he was told he “had to get out onto the street”.

Workers have been told the building will likely be shut down for the whole day.

Those who were evacuated are able to register with authorities to have their belongings retrieved.

A portion of William St between Flinders St and Flinders Lane remained closed at 10am on Tuesday.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria are also on scene assisting.
