OWNERS of the demolished Corkman pub may face more fines of millions of dollars over charges of illegally dumping asbestos and other waste.
The Environment Protection Authority has laid 15 charges against Stefce Kutlesovski and Raman Shaqiri and their companies 160 Leicester Pty Ltd and Cairnlea Pty Ltd.
It has been alleged that after the Carlton pub was knocked down last October, construction and demolition waste was dumped at a site in Cairnlea.
An EPA statement said that the company in charge of the pub site also failed to comply with an EPA statutory notice requiring that waste be appropriately covered and secured.
Illegal dumping of industrial waste, or permitting it, has a maximum fine of $373,104 per offence, and not complying with a minor works pollution abatement notice one of $46,638 per offence.
Mr Kutlesovski and Mr Shaqiri and their firms already face 16 separate charges filed by the Victorian Building Authority and Melbourne City Council over the demolition of the 159-year-old pub.
Mr Kutlesovski and Mr Shaqiri, who are reportedly suing to build a tower on the site, could not be contacted.
The developers faced a huge public backlash over the 159-year old pub’s demolition and initially promised to rebuild it.
Planning Minister Richard Wynne, who had introduced new planning rules on the site, said: “Victoria’s heritage must be protected from rogue developers who flout the regulations for financial gain”.
Lord Mayor Robert Doyle has previously described the developers as “cowboys”, saying “this is the most brazen and wanton act of destructive vandalism that I have seen in my time as Lord Mayor”.
Mr Kutlesovski and Mr Shaqiri could not be contacted.
