The State Government has unveiled detailed plans for the transformation of industrial land, which will be completed by 2050.

The new precinct, named Arden, will cover 50ha of land between Macaulay Rd, Dryburgh St and the Moonee Ponds Creek.

The government and City of Melbourne have released their draft Arden Precinct plan.

The new suburb — centred around the Metro Tunnel Project’s Arden Station — will create thousands of jobs.

The new Arden Station will kickstart the area’s transformation from an industrial precinct to a thriving new suburb on the edge of the CBD.

The draft outlines plans to transform the industrial land along the Moonee Ponds Creek into a residential and commercial hub, including new cycling and transport links to ensure the area is better connected to the rest of the city.

Meanwhile, Queensberry St and Fogarty St will be extended under the plans to create “high street-style boulevards”.

Also included in the draft are plans to surround the new Arden Station with a public space, creating an area similar to Federation Square.

The State Government hopes the development will help neighbouring Parkville’s growth as a biomedical innovation precinct while also turning North Melbourne into an employment hub for science, health, education and digital technology.

Planning Minister Richard Wynne said the jobs created would provide a major boost to the city’s economy.

“Arden will not only be an exciting place to live and work — it will be a driving force for our economy, creating thousands of jobs in the short and long term,” he said.

Lord Mayor Sally Capp welcomed the plan for the new suburb, which is open for public consultation until August 9.

“We want the Arden precinct to set a new standard in urban renewal and to do that we need to hear the community’s views on what they want included in the final plan,” Ms Capp said.

Transport Infrastructure Minister Jacinta Allan said the precinct would “be serviced by three train stations with the Metro Tunnel connecting it to the city, Parkville and the western suburbs”.
