MELBOURNE City council meetings are getting set to be shown live on the internet under a push to make the organisation more accountable.

Melbourne Mayor welcomes political diversity

CITY of Melbourne council meetings would be shown live on the internet under a push to make the organisation more accountable.

And in most cases councillors would no longer consider grant applications from outside groups in secret.

Deputy Lord Mayor Arron Wood wants the changes approved at a council meeting on Tuesday.

“Transparent decision making is the key to fostering a culture of trust between council and ratepayers, and all those who enjoy our city,” he said.

Cr Wood’s motion also calls for a stop to the practice of grant applications to council being considered in closed meeting sessions.

He said the move to open up the process would give the public better access to council decision-making, although in some instances applications would still be judged in secret.

The council meeting will also consider heritage protection for a CBD pub.

The Metropolitan Hotel, on the corner of William and Lt Lonsdale streets, was built in 1925, however the site has had a pub since 1854.

A developer has applied to partially demolish the pub and build an office tower above.
