The owners of the pub at the centre of the horror crash that killed five and injured several more say they are “extremely distressed” by the carnage that unfolded on their doorstep.
The Royal Daylesford Hotel owner Cameron Stone told the Herald Sun the desperate rescue effort by his staff — some of whom tried to resuscitate the dead and dying patrons — had devastated the close-knit team.
Workers at the popular watering hole were on Monday struggling to come to grips with how the usually idyllic venue became the scene of unthinkable tragedy.
Daylesford’s longest-standing hotel is ordinarily abuzz with visitors enjoying a drink and soaking up the afternoon sun.
And Sunday evening was no different, until staff and onlookers found themselves racing to help those caught up in the carnage.
“As community members, we know how deeply we have all been impacted,” Mr Stone told this masthead from inside his pub, just metres from where the terror took place.
“On behalf of all of us, at The Royal Hotel in Daylesford, we wish to express our deepest sympathy for those who have passed away, those injured, their families and everyone affected by this terrible tragedy,” he said.
“All the staff at the hotel are extremely distressed and we have counselling on site to assist the team to manage the impact of these events.”
It is not yet clear when the hotel will open its doors to customers again.
But Mr Stone said he was grateful for how quickly local emergency services responded to the crash.
“We’d like to thank the police, the SES, the ambulance services, the CFA and the members of the Daylesford community for their support and assistance,” he said.
“The hotel will be closed until further notice while we assist in the ongoing investigations.
“We ask everyone to respect all parties and their privacy at this difficult time.”
