John Pesutto calls on Daniel Andrews to stand down as Premier

Opposition Leader John Pesutto has called on Daniel Andrews to step down as Premier during a heated Question Time, as the fallout from a damning IBAC probe continues.

Opposition leader John Pesutto has used a fiery Question Time to unleash on Daniel Andrews, calling on him to stand down as Premier.

Mr Pesutto made the demands while questioning Mr Andrews over the government’s failure to act on the findings of IBAC’s Operation Daintree report.

“Will the Premier take responsibility and accept that the only way to clean up corruption in this state is for him to go?” he shouted.

Mr Andrews laughed off the attack, calling it a performative stunt.

Mr Pesutto told the parliament it is “clear that the Premier will not take the advice of highly respected independent integrity watchdogs”.

He added: “Given the Andrews government is mired in corruption, will the Premier now seriously consider his position?”

“If the Premier is the problem, how can he be the solution?”

Daniel Andrews earlier on Tuesday snubbed Ombudsman Deborah Glass’ criticism about his dismissal of an alarming report tasked with finding corruption within his government.

The Premier also confirmed the government is yet to take action on implementing any of the recommendations from IBAC’s Operation Daintree investigation, confirming the matter wasn’t raised during Monday’s cabinet meeting.

Ms Glass last week took a major swipe at the Premier’s values on integrity after he sought to dismiss the findings of the investigation — which probed the awarding of a grant to a Labor linked health union — simply as an “educational report”.

But Ms Glass slammed those comments, telling 3AW: “It was not an educational report, it was a damning report about misconduct of ministerial advisers and ministerial responsibilities for those advisers.”

Mr Andrews on Tuesday dismissed Ms Glass’ comments.

“She’s entitled to have her view — I’m not here to have a debate with her at all,” he said.

“The report is there for you to read and it’s described (as educational) in those terms by the authors of the report.

“Beyond that, I’ve canvassed these matters at length and I’ve got nothing further to add, regardless of any commentary that’s run by anybody, really.”

The state opposition on Tuesday introduced a Bill to the parliament’s upper house which would request that the government immediately acts on the recommendations from the Operation Daintree report.

Opposition leader John Pesutto said there was “no justification” for the government to delay the recommendations.

“Mr Andrews is treating corruption like it is a minor distraction,” he said.

“We are looking with increasing concern about corruption within the government.”

Parliament returned on Tuesday after a five-week Easter break.
