State Greens MP Gabrielle de Vietri has hit a political speed bump after posting a video apparently using her mobile phone illegally while riding her bicycle.
The Member for Richmond posted the video on her Instagram feed with a commentary on the City of Melbourne’s decision to tear up the e-scooter contracts.
But new road rules, passed in the state parliament last year, state that a cyclist cannot operate a mounted or portable device while riding, except to make an audio call, listen to music or for navigation.
Critics accused the keffiyeh-wearing Ms de Vietri, a former Yarra mayor, of blatant duplicity.
“One law for us and one for politicians,’’ one resident said.
Yarra Residents Collective spokesman Adam Promnitz described the video as an example of the Greens’ hypocrisy.
“Gabrielle and the Yarra Greens lecturing others on safety while undertaking the unsafe act of using her mobile device to produce political propaganda is like a Clarke and Dawe skit,’’ he said in reference to the ABC TV satirical duo.
“It is hard to take them seriously on anything to do with transport when they have such a flagrant disregard for basic road rules.’’
Victoria Police confirmed that it was an offence – that incurs a $593 fine but no demerit points – for a cyclist to operate a mounted or portable device while riding.
New mobile phone regulations for motorists that came into effect last year also applies to cyclists.
Last year the Greens MP was banned from the parliament chamber for two days after posing for a selfie with climate activists who had disrupted Question Time.
And earlier this year, Ms de Vietri bizarrely compared the state government’s support for beloved train Puffing Billy to the crisis in Melbourne’s live music scene
And while Yarra Mayor, Ms de Vietri charged ratepayers almost $7000 for an in-house nanny during Melbourne’s Covid-19 lockdowns.
The 41-year-old was elected to represent the innercity Melbourne seat of Richmond in 2022, replacing long-serving Labor MP Richard Wynne.
Ms de Vietri’s office was contacted for comment.
