SUMMER is (apparently) over and if you’re looking for ways to spend your weekend in Marvellous Melbourne, why not take advantage of some of the city bike trails on offer.

Not only will you get a workout, you’ll get to experience some of the best views in town — and not pay a cent.

From steep climbs to flat rides, there are plenty of options to choose from. So get on your bike, breath in the country air or let the salty sea water tinge the nostrils as you explore the best nature can offer.

Here are a list of some of the best.

Capital city trail

Starting at Southbank and following the Yarra River past iconic Melbourne landmarks, this almost entirely smooth 29 kilometre long pavement trail is a great way to see Melbourne. Ride past the Arts Centre, the Royal Botanic Gardens and the MCG before following the Inner Circle Railway through Royal Park and Moonee Ponds Creek towards Docklands.

Meander through vineyards, beautiful mountain scenery, forests and farmland — it suits riders of all levels and is family friendly.

EastLink trail

Winding its way beside the EastLink freeway — make your way towards Port Phillip Bay through numerous trails, open spaces, parks and reserves.

There’s a number of creative bridges designed to make it easy for cyclists, runners and pedestrians to cross from one side of the tollway to the other, too.

The Bay trail

What is not to love about St Kilda and surrounding areas? As you ride past St Kilda Pier, Luna Park and the colourful St Kilda Marina it truly is a great way to spend the day.

And after all that exercise you’ll need to stop into bustling Acland Street for coffee and cake or one of the many restaurants along the foreshore.

Hobson’s Bay Coastal Trail

From the Westgate Bridge to Skeleton Creek this trial takes you past the maritime precinct of Williamstown, gardens, sandy beaches and public artworks.

It’s easily navigated by cyclists and walkers and is clearly signposted with trail markers.
