CUB has rewritten the lyrics to its long-loved VB anthem, as its steps up sledging England ahead of tonight’s third Ashes Test.
The Herald Sun on Wednesday revealed the brewing giant had sent several slabs of VB, cheekily rebranded “England Bitter’’, to sooky English cricketers in the UK.
Now it can be revealed the classic VB song has also been rebooted to take another swipe at the Poms.
The lyrics, re-recorded to have a go at the England team’s poor sportsmanship and whiny attitude, include the stinging line: “You can get it throwing away your wicket. You can get it invoking the spirit of cricket’.’
It, of course, refers to English batsman Jonny Bairstow being stumped fair and square out of his crease during the second Test at Lords this week and Old Blighty going into meltdown when they subsequently lost the match.
The new anthem also pokes fun at English coach Brendon McCullum for suggesting the Poms would now not share a drink with the victorious Aussies any time soon.
The lyrics in full declare:
You can get it getting stumped
You can get it complaining to the umps
You can get it throwing away your wicket
You can get it invoking the spirit of cricket
You get it if your Ben Stokes
You can get it if you’re the coach
Yes our beer may be bitter
But our cricket team isn’t
So England, we’ve got a beer with your name on it
For when you change your mind
And that beer is England. England Bitter.
VB marketing Manager Marc Lord said: “The response from the Australian public – from the Prime Minister down – has been quite extraordinary.
“The England Bitter campaign seems to be reflecting the pulse of the nation and we couldn’t be happier.’’
He said the company had been moved to remake the jingle when the public lapped up the England Bitter concept revealed by the Herald Sun on Wednesday night.
“The VB jingle has been the soundtrack to the lives of generations of Aussie beer lovers,’’ he said.
“We’ve had a lot fun re-recording it for England Bitter! Hopefully even the English will enjoy our Aussie banter.”
English Bitter T-shirts will also be handed out to Aussie fans in the stands at Headingley on day one, as the mind games between the two proud cricket nations continue.
It comes as Anthony Albanese lauded Carlton & United Breweries for sending over slabs of its newly released English Bitter beer to the Poms.
Speaking ahead of the third Test, the Prime Minister acknowledged that he wouldn’t normally weigh in on sporting drama.
But he said UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, whom he described as a good fellow, let “his disappointment get ahead of him here”.
“Good on them (CUB),” Mr Albanese said.
“I think there’s a bit of nonsense going on. Australia have played very well, two-nil up.
“I got taught by the Nuns at St Joseph’s Camperdown all those years ago in primary school, stay in your crease. Stay in your crease. It’s not hard, is it?
“He (Sunak) is just a little bit disappointed.”
Slabs of the beer, a cheeky nod to Victoria Bitter, were bundled on to a Qantas plane on Wednesday en route to Headingley where they will be delivered to the English team.
The slabs were accompanied by a note inviting the Poms to drink their special beers warm or cold, win, lose or draw Thursday’s third Test against the Aussies.
“You can get it not protecting your stumps, you can get it ignoring the umps,’’ the note said.
VB will also release a rejigged version of its iconic jingle, in the great tradition of banter between the two cricketing nations.
“We know the English are bitter about the Lord’s Test, but when they’re feeling less
bitter we’ve got a beer to shout them … our fresh new England Bitter,’’ VB marketing manager Marc Lord said.
“England Bitter has got their name on it and we’re sending a few slabs to the English
Cricket team to enjoy once they’ve cooled off.
“We raise our glass to the whole Australian team for securing a famous win in the
second test, and wish them the best of luck in winning the series.”
