Criminals asked to make submissions to Lawyer X royal commission

Posters asking prisoners to make submissions to the royal commission into the Lawyer X scandal have begun appearing in jails across the state.

Lawyer X name revealed: Nicola Gobbo unveiled as Informer 3838

Posters calling for prisoners to make submissions to the royal commission about the Lawyer X informer scandal have been plastered around Victorian jails.

The poster, seen by the Sunday Herald Sun, prompts inmates to report “cases that may have been affected by the former criminal defence barrister, Nicola Gobbo”.

Jailbirds can request confidential submission packs from prison staff, it says, but they must be mailed to the commission by March 15.

Submissions on broader issues surrounding the use of “human sources” who are subject to legal obligations of confidentiality can be made by April 12.

Barwon Prison in Lara was understood to be home to many of Gobbo’s former clients, including Tony Mokbel, drug dealer Rob Karam and Calabrian mafia boss Pasquale Barbaro.

She also represented gangland figure Carl Williams, who was bludgeoned to death with a part of an exercise bike in the maximum security prison in April 2010.

On March 1, Gobbo, known to police as informer 3838, was revealed as the supergrass who turned on her clients during the gangland war.

Her identity could be published after the Herald Sun won a five-year legal fight against Victoria Police to lift a suppression order.

Director of Public Prosecutions Kerri Judd QC revealed in December she had sent out letters to 20 prisoners whose convictions may be tainted by the scandal.

A royal commission into the police use of informers began last month.
