An “amorous couple” whose alleged late night liaison shut down two City Loop train stations has been arrested.
The pair allegedly damaged a water pipe and sprinkler during a hook up in a stairwell at Melbourne Central about 10.40pm on October 10, partially flooding the station.
Both Melbourne Central and Flagstaff stations were evacuated in the ensuing chaos, as hundreds of Olivia Rodrigo fans tried to get home from the superstar’s concert at Rod Laver Arena.
Police arrested a 32-year-old St Albans woman and a 30-year-old Ringwood man over the incident on Thursday.
The man was held in custody for unrelated matters and is expected to be charged with criminal damage, wilful damage, public nuisance and interfering with fire apparatus.
The woman was released pending further investigation.
Authorities initially believed an act of vandalism was to blame for the waterworks, before revealing it was an alleged crime of passion.
“Metro have reviewed the CCTV footage and it would appear that an amorous couple in a stairwell dislodged a sprinkler,” Transport Infrastructure Minister Danny Pearson said on Wednesday.
“Perhaps the stairwell may not be an appropriate place to find yourself at the end of the dinner.”
