A couple allegedly engaging in a late-night liaison in a stairwell at Melbourne Central station — setting off a fire sprinkler system in the process — has been blamed for sparking a flood and evacuation.

A couple allegedly enjoying a late night liaison in a train station stairwell have been blamed for sparking a flood and evacuation of a number of City Loop stations.

The couple are alleged to have damaged a water pipe and fire sprinkler system after sneaking under a stairwell at Melbourne Central train station.

The damage flooded Melbourne Central station, forcing the evacuation of it and Flagstaff station.

The incident, which occurred about 10.40pm on October 10, caused significant delays throughout the Melbourne rail network and came as hundreds of fans made their way home from the Olivia Rodrigo concert at Rod Laver Arena.

Authorities initially believed an act of vandalism was to blame for the waterworks, but it has since been revealed it was an alleged crime of passion.

“Metro have reviewed the CCTV footage and it would appear that an amorous couple in a stairwell dislodged a sprinkler,” Transport Infrastructure Minister Danny Pearson said on Wednesday.

“Perhaps the stairwell may not be an appropriate place to find yourself at the end of the dinner.”

Victoria Police is investigating the incident.

Officers are now appealing for assistance from the public to help identify the pair in relation to the incident.
