A MAN working on the West Gate Tunnel project has died after being injured in a worksite accident earlier this month.

The man in his 50s died on the weekend after suffering critical head injuries on June 14.

The worker, believed to be an engineer, was hit in his head by a piling rig cable at the Docklands construction site.

John Holland, the subcontractor of the $6.7 billion project, confirmed the death this afternoon.

“We are devastated to hear one of our colleagues, a subcontractor employee on the West Gate Tunnel project, passed away over the weekend following injuries obtained from an incident on site last week,” CEO Joe Barr said.

“Our hearts go out to his family and friends, and all of the team on the project.

“We will provide all the support our employees need during this tragic time.”

Roads minister Luke Donnellan said his “deepest condolences are with the worker’s family, friends and work mates” and said a full investigation was being undertaken by the “relevant authorities”.

CFMEU secretary John Setka took to social media to offer his condolences to the worker’s family.

“No one should ever die at work,” Mr Setka tweeted.
