Melbourne’s train and tram operators have recorded their worst performance results since tough new contracts began and regular passengers will be able to apply for compensation.

Both Metro Trains and Yarra Trams missed their punctuality targets by large margins and under new rules commuters who use Myki pass will eligible for free fares.

Just 88.4 per cent of trains on the metropolitan network were on time, compared to a target of 92 per cent while Yarra Trams were also below expectations with just 78.1 per cent punctuality against of their target of 82 per cent.

Anyone with a Myki pass valid for 28 days or more, who used services for at least 10 days in March, can apply for the value of a single daily fare.

How do Australia’s train networks compare to one another?

Public Transport Victoria acting chief executive Alan Fedda said punctuality had been impacted by multiple incidents, including a gun scare at Flagstaff and major disruption caused by a power cable.

“Despite these external incidents, Metro’s performance was not up to the level that our passengers deserve — I know how frustrating it can be when our services are delayed or cancelled at the last minute,” said Mr Fedda.

“That’s why the tougher targets we built into Metro’s current contract mean they will be providing compensation to passengers this month — under the old contracts, compensation wouldn’t have been paid.

“It’s important that our operators deliver services reliably and on time.

“These contracts set a high bar for Yarra Trams and Metro, and when they don’t reach that level they are penalised.”
