Commuters have been plagued by major rail delays en route to Melbourne CBD on Tuesday morning.

Some services were trapped between stations for more than 40 minutes.

Delays of up to 45 minutes were expected on the Cranbourne, Frankston and Pakenham lines due an equipment fault around South Yarra.

A Metro Trains alert said: “Crews are on site and working to fix the fault as soon as possible.”

Select services are departing from altered platforms between Caulfield and Richmond.

A Frankston service that departed Armadale at 8.20am was halted for 40 minutes before its next station, Hawksburn, in the major delays that caused havoc on the tracks.

And the rail chaos caused an on-flow effect in the western suburbs, with delays on the Werribee and Williamstown lines after drivers were forced out of position.
