Comedians flock to help much-loved mate Russell Gilbert

Gala for Gilbo

MUCH loved funnyman Russell Gilbert has been overwhelmed by the generous and caring support offered by Melbourne’s comedic community as he continues to rebuild his health and his life after suffering a series of devastating personal and medical issues late last year.

Gilbert, a favourite of the Australian stand-up comedy scene and a key member of the Hey Hey It’s Saturday family, was shattered by the tragic death of Rochelle Nolan, his partner of 19 years, last September.

Just two weeks later he was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm and then suffered a stroke while undergoing surgery to treat the aneurysm.

The past nine months have been far from easy for Gilbert, who undergoes weekly treatments to help improve his speech and memory.

Tonight he will be surrounded by friends including Dave Hughes and Anthony “Lehmo” Lehmann at the Gala 4 Gilbo all star comedy fundraiser in his honour at the Palais Theatre in St Kilda.

“I am flattered,’’ Gilbert said. “It is going to be sensational. I know all the people who are actually performing and I am so thankful they are helping me out. It is going to be so much fun. I don’t want to waste it. Who knows, I might do one small thing (on stage).’’

Gilbert said he was focused on his recovery.

“I am going OK. I can’t think of a lot of things, sometimes I tumble, sometimes I jumble but that is where I am at,’’ he said.

“You are learning how to get your brain working. You just have to keep working at it and getting better.’’

Lehmann, the host of Gold FM’s breakfast show said: “Russell is one of the great blokes in life and I did not hesitate to lend a hand. When a mate is in need you do not hesitate.’’

Added Hughes, the host of KIIS FM’s drive show: “And also as a comedian, we love playing in front of a big crowd and when the gig was for Gilbo you knew the crowd was going to be big. They could have sold out the MCG I reckon.’’

The public can support Gilbert via an online fundraising auction at www.mylocalauction.com.au/auction/35/Gala-4-Gilbo/2016 or make a donation at gofundme.com/getaroundgilbo
