A young man has been charged after allegedly mowing down a policeman and police motorcycle in the Melbourne CBD on Wednesday afternoon, shutting down major city streets for hours.

Dozens of police rushed to a busy Melbourne intersection on Wednesday afternoon when an officer was knocked over by an alleged runaway driver, spreading panic through the CBD.

Police swarmed the corner of Collins and Russell streets, after the policeman on a motorcycle was struck while trying to pull over a car about 3.30pm.

While trying to leave the scene, the alleged driver of the car, a 20-year-old Dallas man, also ran over the police officer’s motorcycle.

He was quickly arrested and has since been charged with multiple offences including reckless conduct, assaulting police and drug driving.

Witness Leigh Davison said up to 12 police cars were on scene within 90 seconds of the arrest.

“I have never seen such a quick police response,” he said.

He said police officers were standing over a bald man in handcuffs on the ground.

Another witness said he heard two loud bangs before a car, missing its front bumper bar, mounted the kerb on Collins St near the intersection with Russell St and sped off.

A badly damaged police motorbike was on the ground.

Seconds later, a group of police officers began chasing the vehicle on foot, witness Nathan said.

“The police were yelling at him to stop,” he said.

Up to four Critical Incident Response Units were at the scene and traffic was disrupted, with cars and trams backed up.

The circumstances surrounding why police tried to arrest the driver of the car is not yet known.

The man was arrested not far from the scene and the police officer was being treated for minor injuries.

The intersection was blocked off by police tape.

The torn off front bumper of the silver car has been placed on the footpath in front of the Gucci store.

The man faced an out-of-sessions hearing last night and was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court later today.
