Airline passengers tired of flying home to an empty fridge can now order their groceries online for pick up at Melbourne Airport.

Supermarket giant Coles has set up refrigerated “smart lockers” at the airport’s Terminal 4 car park so busy customers can grab their shopping once they’ve stepped off a plane.

Coles Online general manager Karen Donaldson said the airport smart locker was a solution for those who didn’t have time to stop by the supermarket after a flight.

Customers need to spend at least $50 and can select from three collection windows: 9am-2pm; 3.30pm-7pm and 9:30pm-6am. They are issued with a PIN to open the locker.

“Our new Click & Collect service at Melbourne Airport helps take the stress out of choosing what’s for dinner after a relaxing holiday or business trip …” Ms Donaldson said.

“(It) is just another example of how we are making our customers’ lives easier by offering an anytime, anywhere shopping experience.”

One set of 20 lockers has initially been placed at the airport, and more may be considered depending on customer demand.

The move comes as supermarkets compete for a slice of the growing online shopping dollar.

Coles’ online sales rose by 30 per cent, to $1.1 billion, in the last financial year.

Melbourne Airport chief of property Linc Horton welcomed the latest development.

“The lockers are conveniently located at Terminal 4, right next to our future hotel and commercial precinct which we’re excited to be launching next year,” Mr Horton said.

More than 100,000 travellers and 20,000 workers pass through the airport each day.

Coles has more than 1000 Click & Collect sites nationwide. The airport service is its first beyond a Coles Express or supermarket location.

Coles and Woolworths’ battle to lock in online shoppers also includes competing subscription services that offer unlimited home deliveries for a monthly or annual fee.
