Coles and Woolworths stock eco-friendly items amid strong demand from eco-mums

The drive to reduce waste and pollution is hitting supermarket shelves, with a range of products on the way to minimise the impact on the environment — and your budget. This is what’s next to go in the war on plastic.

Say goodbye to 'single-use'

Major supermarkets are going green by introducing more environmentally friendly products on the shelves amid a push from eco-mums.

Bamboo toothbrushes and adhesive bandages, biodegradable nappies, and chemical-free washing powders are among the items now stocked at supermarkets across the country.

Seaford mum Nicole, 34, says she backs the trend to reduce landfill and deliver a better future for her children.

“After I had my first child, I realised how much plastic and chemicals we use that is just a waste and going into landfill,” she said.

“But I had to buy products online because you just couldn’t get anything at the shops.

“Now there are products appearing everywhere, which is great, like bamboo toothbrushes — they are just as good as the old plastic ones.”

A Woolworths spokeswoman confirmed the chain introduced a wider range of sustainable options earlier this year.

“We know many of our customers are increasingly looking for more sustainable products,” she said.

“As this trend has grown, we’ve worked with suppliers to introduce the likes of bamboo toothbrushes, recycled paper products, and plastic-free bandaids in March.”

The trend is being matched by competitor Coles, which is also moving to broaden its range to include more eco-items.

“With a wide range of environmentally friendly products, Coles is helping make it easier for customers looking to make sustainable choices as part of their shop,” a spokesman said.

In addition to bamboo items, toothpaste, tissues, beauty accessories and shower gels made from plant-based materials are also being offered.
