SNOW has blanketed towns near Melbourne as an Antarctic chill sweeps across Victoria.

Melbourne shivered through a freezing night with the mercury dropping to 4.5 shortly before 6am. But it felt much colder with an apparent temperature of -1 in the city and -7.1 at Avalon. Woodend, Lancefield, Gisborne and Ballan are among the places to see snow today. There is ice and snow on the Calder Freeway and police are urging motorists to stay in the left hand lane and travel at 40-60km/h. State Emergency Services received over 1000 calls for assistance yesterday as winds up to 100km/h uprooted trees and caused widespread damage to property and roads. Severe wind warnings, with the potential of reaching up to 90km per hour, will continue today for coastal areas.
