AUSTRALIA: Hip Melbourne Cafe Offers Rainbow Coffee June 18

CARLTON cafe legend Giancarlo Caprioli knows, and has a nose for, a good coffee.

Mr Caprioli has run Carlton institution the University Cafe since 1976 and has seen Melbourne’s fascination with coffee reach obsessive levels.

“Once upon a time people would have a cup of tea, now everyone wants coffee,’’ he said.

Mr Caprioli, a purist whose personal choice is a short black, says the Melbourne coffee tradition has many Italian influences but Australians tend to sit and sip, rather than drink and go.

The 82-year-old took over University Cafe as single-fronted shop in Lygon St in 1976.

Since then it has evolved into a Carlton dining and socialising landmark. It now serves, coincidentally, Giancarlo coffee blend.

The cafe still has a 1940s-era coffee machine, one of the first, Mr Caprioli believes, to hit Australian shores.

It’s a labour of love — Mr Caprioli works seven days a week, from 9 till 9.

“It’s my life and I love it. It’s a family thing.’’

His wife Beverley has been at his side during his time at the cafe, and his son, daughter and son-in-law are also keeping the cafe thriving.

He said the secret to his family’s success was simple: “Just keep doing the right thing and people will come back’’

In recognition of this long-term commitment, Mr Caprioli received a Lord Mayor’s Commendation, which honours independent small and multi-generational business owners.

Applications for this year’s awards open today.

“Small businesses are the engine room of our economy,’’ Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said.

“Their energy, creativity and passion help to make Melbourne the world’s most liveable city.’’

About 13,000 small businesses employ 75,000 people in the city.
