A sculpted glass office tower that will be home to 5000 workers has been approved for the CBD.
The $1.5 billion project by developer Charter Hall will be a 34-level building at the corner of Collins and King streets.
The tower will feature an extensive retail section on the ground floor, including a market hall, cafes and restaurant.
Health facilities will be provided, and an amphitheatre will be available for events.
Laneways will be created throughout the development, which will have three frontages to allow better pedestrian flow from Collins St through to Flinders Lane.
Designers Cox Architecture and Gensler have included elements of the site’s history in the new building.
It was home to one of Melbourne’s most popular venues, the 19th century-built Federal Coffee Palace, knocked down in the 1970s.
Its 1970s replacement at 555 Collins St is being demolished and construction on the new tower will start in mid-year.
The first stage is due to be finished in late 2022. The project is expected to create more than 2000 construction jobs.
