Grahame McCulloch, the head of the academics’ union who was appointed just weeks ago to take over the Victorian CFMEU, has abruptly resigned.
Mr McCulloch, a former communist, was appointed last month to run the branch after the Albanese Government passed laws placing the union’s construction divisions into administration.
A spokeswoman for the administrator, Mark Irving confirmed on Friday that Mr McCulloch resigned late on Thursday from his position running the branch led for years by former state secretary John Setka.
The spokeswoman declined to answer further questions about the reasons for his departure.
Building unions in Victoria have called a second protest rally next week and have committed more than $1 million towards a High Court challenge to try and overturn the administration.
Treasurer Tim Pallas said he had not been given any information about the resignation of a Victorian CFMEU administrator.
“I think the administrators are doing a very important job,” he said.
“It is a job that will, in many respects, assure a strong and effective union into the long term.”
