A CATTLE farmer who fractured his neck while checking his West Gippsland property was forced to ride for safety on a motorbike while holding up his own head.

A CATTLE farmer who was forced to ride a motorbike with a fractured neck has spoken out about his tough slog to get medical assistance at his own home.

Jim, a 73-year-old West Gippsland cattle farmer, confirmed the ordeal to 3AW on Monday after a friend told the radio station about the tough achievement.

  • The farmer was checking his property for hatching grasshoppers on December 8 last year when he hit a ditch and took a tumble off the bike, with no one else nearby to come to his aid.

    “I cracked my head on the ground but I don’t think I was knocked out,” Jim told 3AW.

    “I got to my feet, I knew there was something seriously wrong.

    “My head wouldn’t stay up. The pain, it hurt so much, so I just held it up by my hair.”

    Jim was somehow able to ride the 500m to his house to call for help, where an ambulance took him to Dandenong Hospital and later the Austin.

    He is expected to make a full recovery.
