Call for Victorian Labor to hold urgent probe into violent Tarneit meeting

A probe into Labor’s bitter factional dispute could be held, with calls for the party to investigate if a western suburbs branch broke party rules. It comes after a rowdy meeting on the weekend, where a controversial party figure was punched.

Labor figure punched in head at fiery branch meeting

Victorian Labor has been asked to investigate the bitter factional dispute that led to a rowdy branch meeting and culminated in a member throwing a punch.

Norm Bristow, a former president of the Hoppers Crossing branch, has written to the party’s administration committee calling for an urgent review.

In a letter, he raised concerns that a group of members from the nearby Tarneit branch had been incorrectly transferred over to Hoppers Crossing and that three people had been wrongly named as executive leaders.

He called for an investigation into recent behaviour at the branch and whether party rules had been abused.

Tensions are rising between Labor groups in parts of suburban Melbourne as Socialist Left leaders contend with the Industrial Left and right-aligned unions.

A looming redistribution is expected to add a new seat in the west, with both sides accusing each other of branch-stacking operations to unseat sitting state MPs.

More than 100 people turned up to factional figure Jasvinder Sidhu’s Tarneit home last Saturday after an impromptu meeting announcement sparked a battle to maintain voting numbers.

Mr Sidhu quickly tried to cancel the event but a large group of people decided to continue on his front lawn and a punch was thrown in his direction during a heated conversation.
