“Unfortunately, I’m removing myself from the race,” she said.
“I know it’s not as exciting as the other option, unfortunately given the situation, causing a by-election in an election year in a state government is something I really can’t do,” Ms Garrett told the radio station today.
The MP is not planning to recontest her seat of Brunswick at the November election after she failed in a bid to move to a safe upper house seat.
Nominees for the mayoral position include Property Council of Victoria executive Sally Capp and Greens councillor Rohan Leppert.
Footy Show host Sam Newman has also said he’s serious about the role.
“I would’ve loved to have done the gig, I think there are some great people in the race — Sally Capp and Sam Newman if he puts his hand up will make for interesting times,” Ms Garret said.
The by-election was prompted by the resignation of Robert Doyle amid sexual harassment allegations, which he has denied.
Nominations for the by-election caused by the resignation open on April 5 and close on April 10.
