High country businesses are willing to go out on a limb to attract tourists back to their region after the summer bushfires.
Tourism North East head Sarah Pilgrim said the January fires declared seven of the region’s nine areas a state of disaster, losing $183-$208 million in tourism.
“The good news is that once the fire threat had passed, with the exception of the Upper Murray, we had very little damage to our tourism businesses,” MS Pilgrim said.
“The region is now open and ready to welcome visitors back. Hotels, restaurants and attractions were all saved.”
Most businesses lost 100 per cent of visitation in January, affecting consumer confidence through to March.
But a new local business is helping to draw travellers back to the area.

Bright Adventure Company has just launched a daredevil package with a difference, offering picnics served on the side of a mountain. It sees guests abseil down 10m to a porta ledge where a three-course gourmet hamper is hand delivered, leaving guests to dine with one of the most breathtaking views in the state.
No abseiling experience is necessary during the three hour experience that includes a 25m warm up abseil and a tuxeduo clad waiter is even available for marriage proposals.
