First it was sand in skate parks, now a Melbourne council has come up with a more concrete solution to keep people out.
Boroondara Council has placed roadblocks in a Hawthorn skate park to deter groups gathering at the facility.
It follows the unusual step taken by Bayside Council to fill skate bowls with sand, tan bark and other materials in an effort to deter skaters.
Bayside Council said the measures would apply to Donald MacDonald Reserve in Beaumaris, Peterson Reserve in Highett Road, and Elsternwick Park and Royal Avenue Reserve in Sandringham.
Workers from Boroondara Council put five large roadblocks in the middle of the beginner skate and BMX playground at H.A Smith Reserve in Glenferrie Rd.
The park was initially blocked off by temporary fencing but the fencing was torn down by vandals, Boroondara Council said.
“Given the removal of this temporary fencing a more durable solution was required and jersey road barriers were installed,” the council said in a statement.
“These barriers will be removed once restrictions have been removed by the Victorian Government.
“Council encourages all members of our community to comply with the Victorian Government’s directions because we are all in this together and must behave responsibly.”
Bayside Council said it would remove material from its skate parks once restrictions ease, in accordance with state government guidelines.
