A booby trapped fence, weapons including a loaded handgun, luxury jewellery and nearly $30,000 in cash have been uncovered during a police raid in Melbourne’s east.

A 21-year-old man and 23-year-old woman were arrested during an early morning raid of a property on Anderson Close in Bayswater North on Wednesday.

Police allegedly seized a cache of weapons including a loaded handgun, ammunition, shotgun cartridges, nine knuckledusters, two extendible batons and a flick knife.

A $40,000 Rolex watch, $10,000 diamond bracelet, $27,750 in cash — allegedly the proceeds of crime — and an ounce of white powder believed to be cocaine were also seized, police said.

The pair, both from Bayswater North, are also facing an unusual charge of setting a trap to cause serious injury after police allege they booby trapped an outer fence with hundreds of metal nails.

Police charged the duo with 31 offences each, including firearm and weapon offences, trafficking cocaine and knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime.

The arrests were made after an investigation into an alleged hooning event in Licola Crescent, Dandenong South in April, for which they are expected to face further charges.

Sergeant Paul Holtzinger from the Greater Dandenong, Casey, and Cardinia Achilles Taskforce said: “There is no doubt the community is a safer place when firearms and prohibited weapons are in the hands of police and on their way to being destroyed.”

“While our team is dedicated to investigating hoon drivers in Melbourne’s southeast, we are also uncovering further criminal offending as a result of these investigations and holding offenders to account,” he added.

A 19-year-old female and 21-year-old male from Rowville were also arrested but were released pending further enquiries.

The alleged offenders were both bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court on April 30.
