Premier Jacinta Allan will announce her new cabinet on Thursday following the resignation of treasurer Tim Pallas.
At least three portfolios will switch hands as the new ministers are sworn in at a ceremony at Government House, with Victoria’s next treasurer set to be revealed.
The reshuffle, however, is otherwise expected to be minimal.
Member for Bentleigh Nick Staikos is set to be the newest cabinet member in Ms Allan’s government.
Labor sources have confirmed that Mr Staikos has been chosen to move up into the Victorian government ministry with an announcement set to be made in the coming days ahead of Ms Allan’s ministry reshuffle after the departure of Treasurer Tim Pallas.
Labor sources confirmed on Tuesday, that Mr Staikos was put forward unopposed to fill the vacancy.
Mr Staikos, who was officially announced as Victoria’s newest minister on Wednesday, said he was thrilled to be joining Ms Allan’s ministry and was “ready to serve in any portfolio”.
Under Labor’s existing stability deal, Mr Staikos, who is in Mr Pallas’s Left-aligned National Union of Workers faction, was next in line to move into the ministry.
However, there were rumours that Narre Warren South MP Gary Maas, a former secretary of the now named United Workers Union was also considering throwing his hat in the ring, but he did not.
From the Left, Frankston MP Paul Edbrooke was a contender but its understood he will not move up into the ministry as Labor has decided to keep to the pact.
Labor sources said Mr Staikos was on Sunday night “doing the numbers” trying to sure up support ahead of Mr Pallas’s official announcement he would retire from politics on Monday.
However, his move in to the cabinet has been questioned by some of the Labor Party caucus who say the cabinet is lacking members with “real life experience”.
Mr Staikos worked for ANZ Bank while studying at Monash University.
But since graduating has mainly worked for various state and federal members and was a councillor for Glen Eira City.
On Tuesday, Premier Jacinta Allan was asked about the ministerial vacancy and who will replace Mr Pallas as Treasurer, but she said no announcements were being made.
