Manchester United stars have got their Aussie tour rolling in the most Melbourne way – boarding a city tram before receiving a rock star welcome in the nation’s sporting capital.

Superstar players of the English Premier League giant on Saturday arrived at their only public Melbourne appearance in style, stepping off a C-class tram at Federation Square to the delight of thousands of vocal fans.

The millionaire sports celebrities were greeted by a sea of red shirts and a chorus of “Un-it-ed” from supporters from near and far in town for a historic two-match series at the MCG.

The Sunday Herald Sun rode a bright red Manchester United branded tram through city streets under police escort, with Red Devils stars stunned by the warm reception they have received.

Fan favourite Marcus Rashford said he had been wowed by the level of support and magnificence of the mighty MCG.

“To be honest, I wasn’t expecting so many people and such a big stadium,’’ he said.

“It was a great atmosphere and it’s great to see so many fans in Melbourne.’’

The thousands of fans that flocked to Fed Square to see their EPL heroes in the flesh were the first in the world to see United’s new Adidas away jersey, to be debuted in Tuesday night’s match against Crystal Palace at the MCG.

So far from United’s iconic Old Trafford home, the Fed Square stage was transformed into a makeshift “Theatre of dreams”, with upside down player shirts and a faux locker room to celebrate the Red Devils’ trip down under.

United’s Scott McTominay said the passion of Melbourne fans was obvious.

“The people are wild – they are crazy fans and we absolutely love them,’’ he said.

“It’s rare for us to come to this neck of the woods so for us to see it all has been amazing.”

Teammate Luke Shaw said he was blown away by Australia’s greatest stadium.

“The atmosphere at the MCG is incredible but the stadium was so beautiful,’’ he said.

“To see so many fans was incredible and the fact we get to do it again on Tuesday is amazing.’’

The United stars were presented Sherrin footies on-board the tram by Hawthorn footballer Changkuoth Jiath and Shaw said he was intrigued by Australia’s national sport.

“I would love to see a game of that,’’ he said.

“We saw it on the tele the other night and it looks a tough game.’’

At Fed Square, as the crowd burst into a boisterous rendition of Red Devil anthem “Glory, Glory man United’’, Shaw said the club heard the support loud and clear.

“We appreciate the welcome from fans and hope we can come back and do it again,’’ he said.
