A JUNIOR sports star has stunned the suburban footy world by winning an eighth straight league best and fairest award.
Bayswater’s Ben White was recently named the Eastern Football League’s under 17s most valuable player, capping an incredible run of top individual honours every year possible in his sport.
Club officials believe White was overlooked by AFL pathway clubs put off by his height but underestimating his heart.
But the Ed Sheeran lookalike still dreams of an AFL career and after winning the league’s best and fairest from under 11’s up is now expected to draw the attention of talent scouts.
“It’s always been a dream but we’ll have to wait and see,’’ he said. “They say I’m too small but that is sort of motivation.
“It gets me going.’’
White, 17, has never won a premiership on the way to his unprecedented best and fairest feat and said he would hand back every medal for a flag.
With no awards handed out in under 9s and 10s, it means he has been judged the league’s best in every eligible season he has played.
Such is his midfield dominance, opposition teams have tried to tag the 172cm talent for years but failed to catch the gut-busting runner whose favourite players are Melbourne’s Jack Viney and Nathan Jones.
Proud dad Mick, who coached Bayswater’s under 17 team this year, joked his son must be nice to the umpires but was chuffed his boy had “done very well for himself’’.
“He’s just a little fella but he always has a crack,’’ he said. “He’s little in stature but he’s got a big heart.’’
White’s sublime skills won him two senior games for Bayswater as a 16-year-old late in the season and he booted a goal in each.
Bayswater junior vice president Nic Maxwell said White’s footy smarts and “beautiful foot skills’’ were the secret behind his success.
“He’s won it in every age group,’’ he said. “I don’t think it will happen again.’’
