Residents in central Victoria have been told to evacuate their homes as an out-of-control grassfire burns near Bacchus Marsh.

Authorities issued a leave now warning for Glenmore, Ingliston, Maddingley and Rowsley about 5pm with as many as 60 vehicles called into respond.

“Wind speed was high, heading in an easterly and northern direction,” a CFA spokeswoman said.

“Nearby assets were under threat. Asset protection was activated, power lines were involved.”

The fire was moving in a north-easterly direction towards Ingliston and Ironbark Rd.

Residents were urged to leave for homes of friends and family away from the warning area, and to turn away from sights of smoke and fire when driving.

The leave now notice was later downgraded but the CFA urged the public to stay informed, warning grassfires spread quickly and generate extreme heat, which can kill before flames reach.

The blaze was one of several fires authorities faced on Friday, with Melbourne recording it’s hottest day of the summer and a total fire ban enacted across parts of the state.

More than 18 CFA units responded to a grassfire in Phillip Island, with a helicopter called in to help battle the Cowes fire.

The fire, which broke out just after 5pm, had been brought under control by 6.30pm.
