The decision to return Hells Angels boss Angelo Pandeli to Australia was made by Dubai authorities.
The Australian Federal Police said in a statement on Tuesday morning that its officers accompanied Pandeli out of the United Arab Emirates last Friday after an “independent decision” by that country.
“Prior to the man being deported, the AFP informed relevant state and Commonwealth agencies that the man would be returning, where he would be returning to, and at what time,” an AFP statement said.
“On arrival, the man was escorted by the AFP to a secure room, where a search warrant was executed, with personal belongings seized.”
What those belongings were and the current arrangements surrounding Pandeli remain unclear.
There is underworld talk that he has been released from custody but the AFP had declined to clarify this.
“The AFP continues to have coverage of the individual,” the agency statement said.
It went on to say the matter was a “complex investigation”.
“For the safety of individuals and to preserve operational integrity, the AFP will make no further comment at this time,” the AFP said.
Pandeli is regarded as one of Australia’s most significant organised crime players.
He has been linked to transnational drug trafficking and is well connected with powerful syndicates in multiple countries.
