Labor has selected Australian Services Union branch secretary Lisa Darmanin to fill the Victorian Senate spot left vacant following the death of Linda White.

Ms Darmanin was the frontrunner for the position, which was confirmed at a meeting of the party’s public office selection committee on Wednesday night.

Labor’s Socialist Left faction is understood to have resolved the selection without going to a ballot after other candidates withdrew from the race.

Knox City Councillor Sorina Grasso and Emily’s List CEO Pamela Anderson withdrew earlier in the week, with solicitor and unionist Nadia David pulling out earlier on Wednesday.

This meant the faction was left to choose between Ms Darmanin and cultural diversity advocate Wesa Chau during its internal processes.

One of Labor Left national conveners Julian Hill said Ms Darmanin was terrific and would make a serious contribution in the Senate.

“She’s smart, tough and decent and will be an asset to the government,” Mr Hill said.

“I’m delighted at her victory and can’t wait to see her in action in Canberra.”
