A GLAMOROUS new 100-room hotel with rooftop pool has opened in Melbourne’s “second CBD”, Box Hill.

AN Asian-themed hotel has opened in a suburb with one of the highest concentrations of Chinese migrants in Melbourne.

Mantra has launched The Chen as part of its Art Series Hotel Group in Box Hill.

It is named after Chinese-born Australian abstract artist Zhong Chen who was a three-time finalist in the Archibald Prize.

The 100-room boutique hotel, on Whitehorse Rd, features art works by Mr Chen, art libraries and an arts TV channel.

It is part of the Deague Group’s Whitehorse Towers complex — the tallest residential building outside the CBD comprising 511 units across two towers of 36 and 24 levels.

Mantra Group CEO Bob East said the hotel reflected the artist’s fun and relaxed persona and celebrated the ethnic diversity of Box Hill.

“Box Hill is emerging as a second CBD to Melbourne given its great transport links and The Chen will contribute to this evolution,” he said.

Box Hill has been transformed by Asian migration in recent years with the China and Hong Kong-born population rising from 18.3 per cent in 2006 to 30.6 per cent last year.

More than a third of residents claimed Chinese ancestry at the last census.

The Chen provided up to 500 construction jobs and it will directly employ 120 staff.
