WHEN it comes to the crunch in the battle for Aussies biscuit affections, the iconic box of Shapes is our top choice.

While Victorians prefer to munch on a savoury snack including Savoys and Saladas, our northern neighbours have a sweeter tooth, gobbling more packets of Tim Tams, Mint Slice and Tiny Teddies.

Well-known Australian brand Arnott’s revealed its top 10 bestsellers this week, with many childhood flavour favourites missing the cut.

Shapes are the most purchased brand in most states across Australia after the biscuit was launched in a range of flavours in the 1950s. Up to half of Australian households have a pack in their pantry with the most popular flavours being BBQ, Chicken Crimpy and Pizza.

The indulgent Tim Tam range came second on the list followed by Savoy (also known as Jatz), Vita-Weat and the quintessential Scotch Finger ranked fifth.

Lunchtime biscuits and healthy snacking crackers Cruskits and Salada came next. At the bottom was Tiny Teddy with the delicious Mint Slice scraping in at 10th place.

The results are likely to fuel debate in office tearooms across the country.

Biscuit habits differed slightly between states with Victorians registering as the biggest consumer of Shapes, Jatz and Salada.

While our NSW neighbours had a slightly sweeter tooth gobbling more packets of Tim Tam, Scotch Finger, Mint Slice and Tiny Teddy.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull nominated a Sao with Vegemite as his favourite, while Opposition leader Bill Shorten loved to snack on Cheds or Ginger Nuts.

Aussie women’s cricket captain Meg Lanning said the Kingston range was her biscuit of choice.

In Victoria, Premier Daniel Andrews also opted for a Kingston or a sneaky Mint Slice while across the chamber Matthew Guy preferred milk chocolate Royals or BBQ Shapes.

The Footy Show host Sam Newman is a fan of none, saying “I don’t eat biscuits” when asked by the Sunday Herald Sun.

His co-star Rebecca Maddern said she did not indulge often but when the occasion arose she chose the Scotch Finger with a cup of tea.

The classic shareable biscuit was also the favourite of Dave Hughes and Robert (Diper) DiPierdomenico.

“I am a shortbread kind of guy,’’ DiPierdomenico said.

“I don’t like the chocolate ones, I like the original.

“You can break it up, dip it in or have one now and one later.”
