Anzac Day March Melbourne 2021: How to register for a spot in the parade

Veterans will have the chance to register for a spot in this year’s Anzac Day parade in Melbourne on Tuesday — here’s how to register.

Approval given for 5,500 Anzac Day marchers in Melbourne

Registrations to be part of this year’s Anzac Day parade in Melbourne will open on Tuesday.

Australian and New Zealand veterans — comprising current and ex-service members — will get priority. Allied forces will be assigned tickets if places remain, followed by descendants of veterans.

A maximum 5000 veterans and 500 support people will be allowed to march along St Kilda Road to the Shrine of Remembrance.

Other Victorians wanting to pay tribute are urged to mark the day locally or at home.

RSL Victoria state president Rob Webster said: “As Anzac Day fast approaches, RSL Victoria and sub branches will be offering a suite of events offering Victorians the opportunity to commemorate and honour our Anzacs.

“While we understand and respect there may be veterans and their extended families who may be disappointed with the modified Anzac Day march in Melbourne, RSL Victoria is committed in commemorating in Melbourne and across Victoria within the COVID-safe framework.’’

Once participants submit their registration online they will receive an automatic response to confirm it has been received.

Applicants will receive more information in the week starting April 13.

Organisers stress that registration does not automatically guarantee a place.

Allocation of tickets will be considered based on the time of when registrations were submitted and the priority of Australian and New Zealand veterans first followed by allied forces and descendants.

All registrations will be stored in a central system so that if health advice changes to allow more participants, additional tickets will be released.

All RSL Victoria sub branches and Victorian associations have been notified to share registration information for the parade with veterans, serving or ex-serving, in their networks.

Dr Webster said Victorians could honour our war heroes at local events or by standing in their driveway as part of the Light up the Dawn initiative.

“The importance and tradition Anzac Day has never wavered,’’ Dr Webster said.

“This year we ask all Victorians to take part in one of the many COVIDSafe Anzac commemorative activities happening across the state.

“Stand in your driveway, on the balcony, watch the service on your phone or TV, listen to services on the radio or go to a local event. There are many ways that we can all remember this Anzac Day.”

This year’s parade route will be shortened, with veterans to march 1.5m apart in groups according to their age and coronavirus risk. Supporters will have to scan in using QR codes on the route and COVID-safe marshals will be in place.

The dawn service at the Shrine of Remembrance will be capped at 1400 people, with registrations open on the shrine website on April 15.
