Anti-Semitic graffiti scrawled along walking track in Chadstone

Anti-Semitic graffiti has been sprayed on more sites in Melbourne’s southeast in the latest attack in the city’s “swastika epidemic”. The vile abuse comes after number of “repugnant” attacks across the Chadstone area.

A Melbourne walking track has been sprayed with anti-Semitic graffiti, two months after similar hits on a nearby business and public spaces.

Swastikas and anti-Jewish messages were scrawled on buildings and electricity boxes along Gardiners Creek Trail, which runs along the Glen Waverley Line, near Holmesglen station on Monday.

“Gas the kikes” was written in large red lettering along a fence.

“F--- Jew scum” was plastered on an electricity box.

The threatening Chadstone graffiti has been labelled “repugnant” by the leader of a peak Jewish body.

“This repugnant Nazi graffiti, calling for the murder of Jews, is an assault on all Victorians and is meant to traumatise and create a climate of fear,” Dr Dvir Abramovich of the Anti-Defamation Commission said.

“There is something very troubling and unsettling happening in our state and it’s important to remember that whenever such despicable incidents happen, there is a chilling emotional damage on all community members.

“We must send the message to those who seek to sow the seeds of division and menace that they will not succeed.

He called on the government and councils to do more to stop the scourge.

“Enough is enough,” Dr Abramovich said.”

Detectives from Monash Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating.

“Every Victorian has the right to feel safe and secure in the community and in practising their faith, pursuing their values, beliefs and interests,” a Victoria Police spokesman said.

“Victoria Police does not tolerate violence and takes all crime seriously, including that which is motivated by prejudice, racism or discrimination.”

In mid July “Hitler Youth” and “Hitler was right!” were scrawled on two walls in Ashburton.

One of the messages was accompanied by a swastika.

The attacks are part of what has been labelled a “swastika epidemic” in Victoria.

Those attacks came just two weeks after a nearby Chadstone cafe owned by a woman descended from Holocaust survivors was targeted with anti-Semitic graffiti.

Aliza Shuvaly’s cafe was targeted by vandals who hit her store with Holocaust-denying words and swastikas painted on her fence.

The store was first hit with scrawl reading: “The Holocaust is a lie”.

The second read: “The Holocaust didn’t happen but it should have.”

Both were accompanied by swastikas.
